NEWS - What's happening at McDowell & Headwaters

Labyrinth at McDowell

McDowell Presbyterian Church has created a modified labyrinth on its grounds for any and all to enjoy. The labyrinth is not a maze. In a maze, the object is to find one’s way through a walking puzzle, with lots of false leads along the way. By contrast, a labyrinth’s paths lead the walker to the center and back out again: there is no getting lost along the way.

Wes Maupin & Larry Smith contemplate their work

The purpose of a labyrinth is to create a spiritual space where a person may walk quietly, alone or with others, in meditation or prayer. It has long been recognized, from pilgrimages to far away places, to the casual walk down a country lane, that walking and praying are good companions. The labyrinth offers such an opportunity.

McDowell’s labyrinth is modified from the usual pattern but serves the same purpose. The design has been mown into tall grass on the church grounds. Over time, it is planned to have wild flowers growing among the grasses as well and all are invited to bring along wild flower seeds and cast them into the tall grass.

All are welcome to use the labyrinth any time of day.

Kid's Klub

Kid's Klub, for elementary-age youth (kindergarten through 5th grade), on certain Sundays at McDowell, from 1.30 - 3.00 p.m., is underway.  There are be games, music and crafts, as well as Bible teaching.  If you have any questions or are willing to help, contact Missy Douglas at 396-3379 or Pastor Beth at 396-3624.  Remaining summer date is Sunday, August 22.  All children are welcome, whether living here or visiting.  Note on your calendar that the first date for Kid's Klub in the fall is Sunday, September 12.

Drive-In Movie Nights at McDowell

We’ll have some drive-in movie nights this summer in the Manse yard (the garage makes a great backdrop for a movie). Bring a chair or a blanket, bring some friends, and come out and enjoy a good old-fashioned drive in.  Next Date:  Friday, August 27 at dark (between 9 & 9:20 p.m.).  Featured movie:  The Blind Side:  A disadvantaged young man finds a family to love and be loved by (with football on the side).

Fifth Sunday Service at McDowell

Sunday, August 29, at 11.15 a.m., area churches in eastern Highland County will gather at McDowell Presbyterian for a Fifth Sunday Service, with a pot luck lunch to follow.  There will be no services at Headwaters this Sunday.

Prayer 101

Feeling as if your prayer life needs a jump-start?  Wondering what the Bible has to say about prayer?  Asking yourself if prayer is anything more than sending someone a good thought?

Sign up for a three-week introduction to prayer as found in the Bible.  Sessions will be on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. at the manse, on Sept. 5, 12, and 19.  All are welcome, whether members of McDowell & Headwaters, another church, or no church at all.

The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board at McDowell.

Methoterian Cook-off Throwdown

Come Saturday, September 18 to the grounds of McDowell Presbyterian, to enjoy some good food and support worthy local missions.  The Presbyterians have challenged the Methodists to a cook-off, to see just who really are the best cooks in our valley.  There will be loads to eat, as well as prizes for crowd favorites in various categories.  Bring some cash to support our local food bank and other good causes and definitely bring a good appetite, because it is on!

Shoes to Kenya Project

We are continuing to collect shoes -- all kinds of shoes -- new and used, women's, men's, and children's shoes -- around the area, tons of shoes are being collected from closets to send to Kenya, where women who have either themselves contracted AIDS or whose husbands have died from the disease, making them outcasts in their communities, are being trained to repair and sell shoes in order to become self-supporting.  So clean out your closets and bring your unwanted shoes to the box in the Fellowship Hall at McDowell Presbyterian any time (the door is always open).  Make a difference, two shoes at a time!

Help Area Food Bank

Word of Faith Church in Monterey acts as the local distributor of food for the Blue Ridge Food Pantry, serving 50 families in our area.  McDowell and Headwaters collect food to help Word of Faith's vital food ministry.  Drop off canned or dry goods at McDowell or Headwaters and folks from Word of Faith will take them to Monterey.  Food baskets are in the Narthex (front of the church) at both places and in the Fellowship Hall at McDowell.  Please help with this important food ministry.  Food Pantries around the country are reporting a drop in donations, attributed to the difficult economic times we're in.
